Student Blogging on Moodle

I posted the TweenTribune link to my webpage and started having my Comm Arts - Technology students go to it at the beginning of each class period. They have their own blog on their profile page in Moodle and they enjoy adding to it, so I thought this would be a great way to have them keep up to date with age appropriate (and interesting) news as well as practice some important LA skills. I ask them to navigate through the day's stories and choose one to read and write about on their blog. In the… Continue

Invest in the Quest (Destiny, that is)

Edison Sustained Silent Reading, Part II:
10th graders can see their record of library books checked out. In the uber-catalog system, Destiny Quest, they logged in with their nearly universal (in MPS) username and password. Now they can see their overdues and claim, more arduously than ever, that they've already returned the book. Hrumph. This is progress??

Destiny Quest, or DQ, keeps lists of books you've read, are reading, or want to read into your account, accessible

Classroom Technology

This video was on Michael Wesch's blog. I know that MILI teachers do not have these issues with technology. Floppy discs? Really?

entry point for new students

With the start of 3rd quarter, the choir wiki has proven incredibly useful in helping new students to the choirs become a part of the choir community, catch up on events and dates, and get a glance at what the choirs have done thus far this year. This was a plus that I didn't consider at the beginning of the year.

Learning Copyright for Book Trailers

I'm working on a new idea for 10th grade Independent reading projects. Last year I had students do various projects from a grid, this year I'm going to have each student create a Book Trailer for their novels. Students chose a book to read that fit with the theme "Heroes, Journeys and Quests". Tori came up with the book trailer idea. She's handed on a few links to sample book trailers that I'll post below. Learning about copyright however, has changed how I'll approach this assignment. I will ha… Continue

There are some (long) lesson plans on the MILI Copyright Wiki that you could adapt. What exactly do you want to teach about copyright? To be linked so others can see them, they would need copyright free images and music and there are sources for tho…

We wouldn't suggest using Twitter with students in K-12 either. Edmodo is specifically designed for education, so that's the one I'd recommend in middle and high schools, or using TodaysMeet. Twitter, if used in a classroom, is used more in higher e…
